Plunging necklines, sheer miniskirts, and crop tops? All trends from this
year’s Spring/Summer 2012 Paris Fashion Week that you should not be wearing to a
formal entry level Public Relations interview. This in no way means you must
compromise your passion for all things fashion. There are certain taboos that one would not want to fall victim to when attempting to dress properly for an interview but showing whom you are is most important so, just put your best fashion foot forward. A pop of color here and there is always encouraged but, unless you’re Kate Bosworth or at Coachella, feel free to leave the blue hair dye at home. Leather skirts are also in season but, unless you’re hoping to intern at Rick Owens its better saved for a night out at Mr. Chow or a Lenny Kravitz concert.

Clean and polished is just as timeless as a Chanel lambskin bag, but adding playful elements to an appropriate ensemble will most certainly distinguish you in a sea of other hopeful interns wearing pinstripe pencil skirts and bone colored button ups. Don’t get me wrong those are obviously appropriate outfits but, oh so boring. Not everyone can afford the assistance of a personal shopper at lets say…Bergdorf Goodman, but putting together a fashion forward outfit does allow your innovative side to come out. Conservative colored clothes is said to be an interviewessential but look at Victoria Beckham in a black, navy blue, or white outfit. Does she make it look boring? Didn’t think so. Why would you ever turn up to an interview in something you didn’t feel comfortable in let alone feel like yourself? It’s like watching The Blair Witch Project when you really wanted to watch the Rachel Zoe Project. Men and woman if you haven’t taken notice a structured blazer will take you from season to season, and also from internship to public relations professional. Whether the blazer is Proenza Schouler or from a local shopping mall, or even a thrift store, take the interview along with the outfit as an opportunity to advertise your stylish personality. Jewelry should be minimal for the interview process but a boyfriend watch should be left on for all occasions, and whether it’s a vintage Rolex or Michael Kors, a watch often times exemplifies punctuality and fashion all in one accessory. All in all, dress fashion forward and professionally because an interview is the inner view of you.

Women, there is an abundance of options of articles of clothing you could wear.
Think minimal and structured and not trying to hard, or think Tom Ford when he was creative director at Gucci incorporating sleek and simple designs that can be adjusted to a plethora of occasions. Think business appropriate attire in solid colors or subtle weave patterns. Something I’ve been told was dress for the industry in which you would hope to work for. So ladies, feel free to rock your Derek Lam leather pants with a neutral blouse and your favorite blazer.

Men, a suit is a wardrobe essential. It’s proper attire both for an interview and a
night out on the town. Obviously a John Varvatos suit is an ideal suit to own but with the price point might be out of reach for most. There are other options so frequently check stores like H&M and Zara for good suit options. Sure Bijan on Rodeo Drive is world renowned for having the best and most expensive suits in the world with suits ranging up to $50,000 but with the global economy is crisis it might not be best investment. So leave the tee shirt and Christopher Kane x J Brand neon shorts packed for a weekend in South Beach.

You’re not going to have the best days every single day of your internship, but try your

So you finally scored the internship you’ve always wanted. You start to think about what to
wear and how early you need to set your alarm clock. A few weeks go by, and you realize your
internship is getting a little repetitive, and well, dull. What do you do now?

First, you need to recognize that an internship can be the key to landing your dream job. You
need to be on top of your work at all times, even on days you would consider, “slow.” After all,
the overall goal is to be offered a position at the conclusion of your internship. Here are a few
tips you need to know in order to maximize your internship experience and earn that paid (not
with school credit, but money) position:

When you’re given a task, call it your own. Pretend that all of your work will include your
name as the entitled owner. Filing media clips and making copies don’t seem to require too much
effort, but make sure you do it with the best of your abilities. If you get used to doing things with
high standards from the get-go, your consistency will pay off.

Be independent. Don’t wait for your boss to ask you to do things when it’s already a part of
your daily routine. Employers love interns who can do things on their own and who exemplify to
be an asset to the company. If forwarding voice mails is a task asked of you to do every morning,
make sure you place that on top of your to-do list unless you are told otherwise. If you spot a
spelling error in one of the calendar listings you posted the previous day, don’t wait for people in
the office to identify your mistake. Correct it right away.

Be a perfectionist. Creating a media list is a pretty standard task. However, how you do it can
make a good impression. If your boss asks for just “basic information,” interpret that to, “all
information that can be used.” Therefore, don’t just list a contact name and phone number.
Go above and beyond and list a contact name, email, phone number, address and a link to that
person’s personal or company website. Organize the list alphabetically or by a category of some
sort. That way, your boss won’t have to ask you if you covered both TV news stations and print
publications.

Be the best that you can be. Picture the ideal intern. Now, times that by three, and that’s
who you want to be. If clients are coming in and out of the building, make sure you introduce
yourself. You’re not going to have the best days every single day of your internship, but try your
best to keep a smile on. Always be willing to help out and go out of your way if you have to. The
intern that all companies want is someone who is approachable, reliable and a joy to be around.
Make a good first and last impression that will convince your boss that you embody what it takes
to seek home at his or her company.

In this industry, there are plenty of hard-working interns, but the ones who prove to be valuable
and beneficial to a company are scarce. Don’t be afraid to shine and prove to your employer that
you deserve more than a summer internship.

San Diego, Calif.—The San Diego State University (SDSU) chapter of the Public Relations Student Society
of America (PRSSA) held its second annual fundraiser at a local Smashburger restaurant that raised
nearly $1,000 over the course of one week, nearly double what the organization had anticipated. From
September 26 through October 2, for every “San Diego Style” Smashburger, Smashchicken sandwich
or black bean burger sold at the Mission Valley and Kearny Mesa locations in San Diego, one dollar was
donated to PRSSA.

On Wednesday, September 28, the PRSSA chapter held a social at the Mission Valley location in place
of their usual Wednesday night meeting. Alumni, current members, SDSU faculty, friends and family
gathered to network and support the organization and its cause. A “tweet-wall” was displayed inside the
restaurant, streaming live tweets of the event using the hashtag, “SmashinPRSSA.”

SDSU Alumna and former PRSSA National Vice President of Membership Services, Jemalyn Chavez, who
also attended the social at Smashburger said, “As a former of SDSU PRSSA member, I was happy to share
my experiences with graduating seniors and learn about some of the Chapter’s outstanding goals for the
upcoming year.”

The event was made possible by local, alumni-owned boutique public relations firm, Elle
Communications and its client, Smashburger, a “fast-casual” restaurant that currently has six locations in
the San Diego area. The money benefitted the members of the organization who attended the 2011
PRSSA National Conference that was held in Orlando from October 14 through October 18.

“Being successful with such fundraisers gives members the chance to experience National Conference,”
said chapter president, Delanie Billman. “The more money we raise, the more members we can send.
That’s what’s important. “
