Many students stray away from joining PRSSA because they’re afraid that the group does not apply to them, or maybe the group does not do anything interesting. I am here to assure you that whether you are or are not a public relations major, PRSSA is a great group to be a part of. Below I have listed five solid reasons as to why this group is well worth your time and energy.
1) Networking – This group allows you to meet some of the most ambitious personalities on SDSU’s campus, as well as people from across the United States. PRSSA holds an annual national and regional activities a couple times a year where members from chapters across the country gather, providing for an excellent opportunity to make some new connections.
2) Professional skill Building – Our chapter holds meetings every Wednesday night at 7 p.m. with various topics from week to week. Members have the opportunity to pick up helpful insight on things like becoming a more effective interviewee, building an effective résumé and having a more mature, professional social media presence.
3) First-hand Look into a Growingly Popular Major – Yes, the field of public relations has input in almost every medium of media. Companies have been forced to seek specialists to strengthen company exposure, relying on experts in the field of PR to go to work and demonstrate their talents.
4) Your input counts! – Bring all the knowledge and tools you’ve acquired from your major and use that as a tool in PRSSA. The exposure to other disciplines allows for a broader array of ideas to be present, inevitably helping to shape a stronger group. Your voice is heard here, where one can express new suggestions for philanthropic or fundraising events.
And last, but not least … join PRSSA for
5) The experience you gain! – Like every path you choose, the experience is what you make of it! You and I are similar in that we are all currently attending San Diego State University, so as a peer, I advise you to increase your chances as a future professional and get involved. The experience will only benefit you.
